HomePlanningHub was created to solve a common problem in home improvement: the difficulty of estimating materials without either overbuying by a significant margin or running short mid-project. When planning a concrete patio, a roof replacement, a room repaint, or a tile floor installation, having a reliable material estimate before visiting the supplier makes the difference between a smooth project and a frustrating one.

What we build

Every calculator on this site covers a specific material estimation scenario. The concrete calculators handle slabs, footings, walls, columns, tubes, steps, curb and gutter, block fill, rebar, and mix ratios. The roofing calculators cover shingles, metal roofing, plywood sheathing, roof pitch, ice and water shield, and snow loads. We also provide an interior paint calculator and a tile calculator for flooring and walls. Each page follows a consistent structure: an interactive calculator, a step-by-step how-to guide, a worked example, common mistakes to avoid, a cost reference when applicable, and a FAQ section.

How we calculate

All formulas use standard geometry and published material coverage rates. Concrete volume is calculated as length times width times depth, converted to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Roofing area uses the footprint area multiplied by a pitch adjustment factor based on the roof slope. Paint estimates subtract standard door and window openings from the wall area, then divide by the coverage rate printed on the paint can. Tile counts divide the floor area by the area of a single tile and apply a waste percentage appropriate for the layout pattern. Every formula is displayed on the calculator page so you can verify the math yourself.

Material constants such as concrete bag yields, paint coverage rates, and shingle bundle coverage are drawn from commonly published manufacturer ranges. Always compare our estimate against the label, product data sheet, or contractor quote for the exact product you plan to buy.

Technical standards

The site is built with Astro, React, and Tailwind CSS v4 to deliver fast load times and strong Core Web Vitals. No tracking cookies are set by default. Calculator components load only when you scroll to them. Your project measurements are stored in your browser's localStorage and are never sent to a server. There is no user account system, no login, and no data collection.
