What is the formula for calculating concrete?
Concrete volume is calculated by multiplying length (in feet) by width (in feet) by thickness (in feet), then dividing by 27 to convert cubic feet to cubic yards. The formula is: Volume (cu yd) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Thickness (ft) ÷ 27. Our concrete calculator handles this automatically and also computes bag counts for 40 lb, 60 lb, and 80 lb mixes.
How much paint do I need for a 12×12 room?
A standard 12×12 foot bedroom with 8-foot ceilings has roughly 320 square feet of wall area after subtracting one door (21 sq ft) and two windows (24 sq ft). One gallon of paint covers about 350 square feet, so a single gallon is usually enough for one coat. Two gallons are recommended for two coats or if painting over a darker color.
How do I calculate square footage of a room?
Measure the length and width of the room in feet, then multiply them: Area = Length × Width. For an L-shaped room, divide it into two rectangles, calculate each area, and add them together. How accurate are the calculations?
All formulas use standard engineering math: geometric volume calculations, pitch-corrected surface area for roofs, and manufacturer-published bag yields and coverage rates. Every calculator shows its formula and a worked example so you can verify the math yourself. Final quantities should always be compared against the specific products you purchase.

How much concrete do I need for a 10x10 slab?
A standard 10x10 foot slab poured at 4 inches thick requires 1.23 cubic yards of concrete. If using pre-mixed bags, you will need approximately 56 bags of 80 lb concrete or 74 bags of 60 lb concrete. We always recommend adding a 10% waste factor, bringing the purchase total to 62 bags (80 lb) or 82 bags (60 lb).
How do I estimate roof shingles for my home?
To estimate shingles, find your roof's total square footage (taking into account the slope/pitch multiplier), and divide it by 100 to get the number of 'squares' (1 square = 100 sq ft). Since a standard bundle of shingles covers 33.3 sq ft, you will need 3 bundles per square. Always include a 10% to 15% waste allowance for ridges, valleys, and starter shingles.
How many 2x4 studs do I need for a load-bearing wall?
For standard residential framing with studs spaced at 16 inches on-center (OC), a general rule of thumb is to estimate 1 stud per linear foot of wall. This ratio automatically accounts for corner assemblies, double top plates, single bottom plates, and stud margins. For walls containing doors or windows, add 2 extra studs (jack and king studs) per opening.
What is the difference between bulk delivery and bagged gravel?
Bulk delivery is significantly cheaper per ton but carries a flat-rate delivery fee, making it ideal for projects requiring over 1 to 1.5 cubic yards (approx. 1.5 to 2 tons). For smaller projects like filling patio joint sand or minor walkway top-offs, buying bagged aggregate at a local home improvement center is easier to transport and handle without tearing up turf.
How much tile waste should I calculate for herringbone or diagonal patterns?
A standard grid or brick pattern requires a 10% material waste factor for cuts. However, intricate patterns require more cuts along boundaries: a diagonal layout needs a 15% waste factor, and a herringbone layout requires a 15% to 20% waste allowance depending on room complexity. Calculating this prevents running out of matching dye lots.
How do I calculate the slope or pitch of my roof?
Roof pitch is expressed as a ratio of vertical rise over a 12-inch horizontal run (e.g., 4:12 pitch means the roof rises 4 inches for every 12 inches of run). You can find this by placing a level on the roof deck, measuring 12 inches horizontally, and measuring the vertical distance down to the roof. How many bags of mulch do I need for a flower bed?
Standard wood mulch bags are sold in 2 cubic foot bags. To cover a garden bed at a recommended 3-inch depth, divide your total square footage by 8. For example, a 160 sq ft flower bed requires 20 bags of 2 cu ft mulch. If using 3 cubic foot bags, divide the square footage by 12.
What is a waste factor in construction estimating?
A waste factor is an extra percentage added to material totals (usually 5% to 15%) to account for mistakes, cuts, damage, and shipping breakage. Adding a waste allowance ensures you do not run out of materials mid-project, which is critical for batches with potential color variations like tile, flooring, or shingles.
How do I choose between laminate and luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring?
LVP is fully waterproof, making it the superior option for high-moisture spaces like bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. Laminate flooring offers superior scratch resistance and a more realistic wood texture but is prone to swelling if water seeps between joints. How long should concrete cure before I build on it?
Standard concrete reaches roughly 70% of its structural design strength after 7 days, at which point you can safely build framing or decks on it. However, it takes a full 28 days to reach its maximum design strength (usually 3,000 to 4,000 PSI). Avoid driving heavy vehicles on a new concrete driveway for at least 7 to 10 days.
