Understanding Stair Stringer Geometry
Cutting a stair stringer is often considered one of the most challenging layout tasks in residential carpentry. A minor calculation error can lead to uneven riser heights, which are a major tripping hazard and will fail building inspections.
The Critical Bottom Step Adjustment
The most common mistake made by DIYers when cutting stringers is neglecting to adjust the height of the bottom-most step. Since the tread board adds thickness to each step surface, the bottom riser height must be shortened by the exact thickness of the tread material.
For example, if your calculated riser height is 7.5 inches and your tread lumber is 1 inch thick:
- First Step (Bottom): Cut the stringer riser to 6.5 inches. Once the 1-inch tread is placed on top, the height from the floor to the top of the tread will be exactly 7.5 inches.
- Intermediate Steps: Cut all other risers to 7.5 inches. Since each step has a tread on the bottom and a tread on the top, the relative step height remains exactly 7.5 inches.
How to Lay Out a Stringer Board with a Framing Square
Using a standard carpenter's framing square is the most efficient way to transfer your calculated stair dimensions onto a 2x12 timber board:
- Identify the tongue (narrow limb) and blade (wide limb) of your steel square.
- Locate your riser height on the outer scale of the tongue and your tread run dimension on the outer scale of the blade.
- Place the square on the lumber so that these two marks align exactly with the top edge of the board.
- Trace the L-shape corner with a pencil to mark the step cut.
- Slide the square down the board, aligning the run mark with the end of your previous trace, and repeat.

How do I calculate the rise and run of a stair stringer?
Measure the total vertical rise. Divide the rise by 7.5 to get the optimal number of steps. Divide the total rise by this number to get the exact riser height. The tread run is typically set to 10 or 10.5 inches.
What is the maximum rise height allowed by building codes?
Under section R311.7 of the International Residential Code (IRC), the maximum rise height of an individual step is 7.75 inches (7 3/4 inches) in residential construction.
Why do I need to subtract the tread thickness from the bottom riser?
To keep all steps at an identical height. Because the first step rests on the floor, adding a 1-inch tread makes that step 1 inch higher than planned. Subtracting the tread thickness from the bottom stringer cut restores consistency.
What size lumber is best for cutting stair stringers?
