Transparency is the foundation of HomePlanningHub. All calculators on our platform list their exact geometric formulas, underlying material density constants, and construction assumptions.
1. Geometric Calculation Accuracy
Our calculator engine performs volume and surface area math using precise standard geometry. Irregular shapes (such as L-shaped rooms or multi-sloped roof decks) are broken down into rectangular and triangular segments to prevent estimation inaccuracies.
- Area (Rectangle): Width × Length
- Area (Circle): π × Radius²
- Volume (Cylinder/Tube): π × Radius² × Depth
- Volume (Cubic Yards): Cubic Feet ÷ 27
2. Building Code & Safety Compliance
Where appropriate, our calculators compare user inputs against standard residential building safety rules (such as the International Residential Code or IRC):
- Staircase Safety Alerts: Flagging steps where the riser height exceeds 9.5 inches or the walk-line tread depth is narrower than 7.5 inches.
- Slab Thickness Recommendations: Recommending 4-inch slabs for patios and walkways, and 6-inch reinforced slabs for heavy vehicle traffic or RV pads.
- Ventilation Rules: Applying the 1/150 rule for attics (1 sq ft of net free ventilation area per 150 sq ft of attic space).

Material weight estimates use verified standard density values from engineering references:

Our cost estimator modules apply regional labor cost multipliers ranging from 0.8x to 1.3x based on local economic conditions (e.g. low-cost rural vs. high-cost west coast metropolitan areas) to help homeowners align their budgets with real-world local contractor bids.
