Roof Shingle Calculator
Calculate the exact number of asphalt shingle bundles needed for your roofing project. This tool accounts for roof pitch, gable or hip roof geometry, and an adjustable waste factor to produce accurate estimates for squares, bundles, underlayment, and nails.

How to Calculate Shingle Quantity
Calculating shingle quantity requires converting your building's flat footprint into the actual sloped roof area, then adding waste for cuts and overlaps.
- Calculate Footprint Area: Multiply building length by width.Footprint = Length (ft) × Width (ft)
- Apply Pitch Multiplier: The pitch factor accounts for the slope. For a pitch of X:12, the multiplier is:Multiplier = √(1 + (Pitch ÷ 12)²)
- Calculate Roof Area: Multiply footprint by the pitch multiplier. For hip roofs, add 6% for hip cuts.Roof Area = Footprint × Multiplier (× 1.06 for hip)
- Convert to Squares and Bundles: Divide total area (with waste) by 100 for squares, then multiply by 3 for bundles.Squares = Area ÷ 100 | Bundles = Squares × 3
Example Shingle Calculation
Let's calculate shingles for a gable roof on a 40x30 foot building with a 6:12 pitch and 12% waste:
- Footprint: 40 ft × 30 ft = 1,200 sq ft
- Pitch Multiplier: √(1 + (6/12)²) = √1.25 = 1.118
- Roof Area: 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,341 sq ft
- With 12% Waste: 1,341 × 1.12 = 1,502 sq ft
- Squares: 1,502 ÷ 100 = 15.02 → 16 squares
- Bundles: 16 × 3 = 48 bundles
Common Mistakes in Shingle Estimation
- Using Footprint Instead of Roof Area: The most common error is ordering shingles based on the building footprint without applying the pitch multiplier. A 6:12 pitch adds 12% surface area; a 12:12 pitch adds 41%.
- Underestimating Waste on Hip Roofs: Hip roofs have more cuts at the hips and ridges than gable roofs. Use 12-15% waste for hips versus 10-12% for gables.
- Forgetting Starter and Ridge Cap Bundles: Starter strips and ridge caps consume additional shingles. Budget 1 extra bundle per 30 linear feet of starter strip and 1 bundle per 35 linear feet of ridge cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many bundles of shingles do I need for 1000 square feet?
One square of shingles covers 100 square feet and consists of 3 bundles. For 1,000 square feet of roof area, you need 10 squares, which equals 30 bundles. Add 10-15% for waste, bringing the total to approximately 33-35 bundles.
How does roof pitch affect shingle quantity?
Steeper roofs have more surface area than flat roofs for the same building footprint. A 4:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.054, while a 12:12 pitch has a multiplier of 1.414. This means a 12:12 roof requires about 34% more shingles than a flat roof covering the same footprint.
What waste factor should I use for shingles?
For gable roofs, use 10-12% waste factor. For hip roofs, use 12-15% due to more cuts at the hips and ridges. If your roof has many valleys, dormers, or complex geometry, increase to 15-18%.
