How to Estimate Attic and Roof Ventilation Requirements

A complete guide on calculating attic ventilation ratios. Intakes, exhausts, net free ventilating area (NFVA), and the 1/150 rule.

By Marcus Vance (DIY Construction Specialist)

Proper attic ventilation is crucial for protecting your roofing system. Without balanced airflow, heat and moisture build up in the attic, causing ice dams in winter, mold growth, and premature aging of the shingles in summer.

The 1/150 Ventilation Rule

Building codes (such as Section R806 of the International Residential Code) generally require a minimum attic ventilation ratio of 1 square foot of ventilation for every 150 square feet of attic floor space.

If your attic has a continuous vapor barrier on the warm side of the ceiling, or if the ventilation is perfectly balanced between intake and exhaust, this ratio can be reduced to 1/300.

Quick Attic Ventilation Formula

  1. Calculate Attic Floor Area: Length x Width = Attic Area (sq ft)
  2. Determine Net Free Ventilating Area (NFVA) Needed: Attic Area / 150 = Total NFVA (sq ft)
  3. Convert to Square Inches: Total NFVA (sq ft) x 144 = Total NFVA (sq in)

Balancing Intake and Exhaust

For a ventilation system to work efficiently, it must be balanced. Air should enter at the lowest point of the roof (the eaves or soffits) and exit at the highest point (the ridge or gable vents).

  • 50% Intake: Net free area located in the lower third of the attic space (soffits).
  • 50% Exhaust: Net free area located in the upper third of the attic space (ridge vent, box vents, gable vents).

Ventilation Material Specifications

Vent Type Average Net Free Area (NFVA) Typical Spacing or Run
Continuous Ridge Vent 18 sq in per linear foot Runs along the entire ridge line
Continuous Soffit Vent 9 sq in per linear foot Runs along the entire eave line
Individual Soffit Vent (8“x16”) 56 sq in per unit Spaced every 5 to 6 feet
Standard Box Roof Vent 50 sq in per unit Spaced evenly near the ridge
Gable Wall Vent 100-200 sq in per unit Mounted on opposing gable ends
