How to Plan and Estimate Bathroom Remodeling Costs
A bathroom remodel is one of the highest ROI home improvements you can make, but it is also the most complex per square foot due to tight plumbing, waterproofing, and electrical requirements.
1. Fixtures and Vanity Sizing
Replacing vanity cabinets and sinks is the focal point of the remodel. Double vanities (60 inches or larger) add substantial resale value but require double plumbing supply lines and drains, which can increase labor allowances if relocating existing plumbing lines.
2. Wet Area Waterproofing Guidelines
Whether installing a pre-fabricated acrylic shower stall or building a custom tiled walk-in shower with a sloped mortar bed, waterproofing is critical. Always apply a liquid waterproofing membrane (like RedGard) over cement board seams before tiling.
3. Ventilation and Lighting Codes
Bathrooms require an exhaust fan vented directly outdoors (not into the attic) capable of moving at least 1 CFM (cubic foot per minute) per square foot of room area. Lighting fixtures placed inside shower stalls must be wet-rated and protected by a GFCI circuit breaker.
