How to Calculate Retaining Wall Materials
A retaining wall requires three main material categories: blocks or stones for the wall face, base gravel for the foundation, and drainage gravel behind the wall. The wall height and length determine the quantity of each.
- Calculate blocks per row: Divide the wall length in inches by the block length in inches (typically 16 inches).Blocks/Row = ⌈Wall Length (in) ÷ Block Length (in)⌈
- Calculate number of rows: Divide the wall height in inches by the block height in inches (typically 8 inches).Rows = ⌈Wall Height (in) ÷ Block Height (in)⌈
- Total blocks: Multiply blocks per row by the number of rows. The top row uses cap blocks, which may be a different size.Total Blocks = Blocks/Row × Rows
- Base gravel: Calculate cubic feet as wall length times base width (typically 2 ft) times base depth (0.5 ft).
- Drainage gravel: Calculate as wall length times drainage width (typically 1 ft) times wall height in feet.
Example Retaining Wall Calculation
20 ft long × 4 ft high retaining wall with 16-inch standard blocks
- Wall length: 20 ft = 240 inches
- Blocks per row: 240 ÷ 16 = 15 blocks/row
- Number of rows: 48 in ÷ 8 in = 6 rows
- Wall blocks: 15 × 5 = 75 blocks (cap blocks: 15 × 1 = 15 blocks)
- With 10% waste: (75 + 15) × 1.10 = 99 blocks
- Base gravel: 20 ft × 2 ft × 0.5 ft = 20 cubic ft (0.74 cu yd)
- Drainage gravel: 20 ft × 1 ft × 4 ft = 80 cubic ft (2.96 cu yd)
Common Mistakes in Retaining Wall Estimation
Skipping the drainage system
The most common retaining wall failure is hydrostatic pressure from water buildup behind the wall. Always include drainage gravel, a perforated pipe at the base, and landscape fabric to separate gravel from soil. Skipping this can cause the wall to bulge or collapse within the first year.
Inadequate base preparation
A retaining wall is only as strong as its foundation. Base gravel must be 6 inches minimum, compacted in 2-inch lifts with a plate compactor. On clay soils, increase base depth to 8-12 inches. Skimping on the base leads to settling and uneven walls.
Not accounting for wall height restrictions
Many jurisdictions limit retaining walls to 4 ft without an engineer's stamp. Walls over 4 ft need structural design for lateral earth pressure. A 6-ft wall can require 50% more material due to reinforcement requirements.
