Understanding Concrete Reinforcement: Rebar vs. Wire Mesh

A comprehensive guide on when to use rebar, wire mesh, or fiber reinforcement in concrete slabs. Spacing, sizes, and installation rules.

Concrete is incredibly strong in compression (resisting loads pushing down on it), but it is weak in tension (resisting forces that pull it apart or cause it to bend). To prevent cracking and structural failure, concrete slabs and structures require reinforcement.

Types of Concrete Reinforcement

There are three primary methods used to reinforce residential and light commercial concrete projects:

  1. Steel Rebar (Reinforcing Bar): Heavy-duty steel bars placed in a grid pattern. Rebar provides structural strength and is required for load-bearing slabs, driveways, footings, and structural walls.
  2. Welded Wire Mesh (WWM): A grid of thin steel wires welded together, typically sold in rolls or flat panels. It is ideal for crack control in walkways, patios, and light residential slabs.
  3. Fiber Reinforcement: Synthetic or steel fibers mixed directly into the wet concrete. It provides secondary reinforcement to prevent micro-cracks during curing, but does not replace rebar or mesh for structural loads.

Choosing the Right Reinforcement

Rules of Rebar Placement

For rebar to provide strength, it must be placed correctly within the slab:

  • Depth Location: Rebar should sit in the middle third of the slab. If the slab is 4 inches thick, the rebar should be supported at 2 inches from the bottom. Never let rebar lay on the ground during the pour! Use plastic or concrete chairs to hold it up.
  • Overlap (Splicing): When joining two bars, they must overlap by at least 12 to 18 inches (or 30 times the rebar diameter) and be securely bound with steel tie wire.
  • Clearance: Rebar must have at least 2 inches of concrete coverage on all sides (bottom, top, and edges) to prevent moisture penetration and rusting, which can blow apart the concrete from within.
