The Complete Guide to Construction Unit Conversions

Construction projects require converting between different units of measurement constantly. A lumber estimate in board feet needs to become a weight for shipping. A concrete pour in cubic feet needs to become cubic yards for ordering. This guide covers the essential conversion formulas every builder needs.

Area Conversions

Square Footage Basics

Square footage is the foundation of most construction estimates:

Rectangle Length × Width 10×12 room = 120 sq ft
Circle π × r² 10-ft circle = 78.5 sq ft
Triangle ½ × Base × Height 10×8 triangle = 40 sq ft

Square Feet to Square Yards

Many flooring and landscaping materials are sold by the square yard:

Square Yards = Square Feet ÷ 9

Example: A 12×12 room is 144 sq ft = 16 sq yd.

Square Feet to Squares (Roofing)

Roofing materials are sold in “squares” of 100 sq ft:

Squares = Square Feet ÷ 100

Example: 2,400 sq ft roof = 24 squares.

Volume Conversions

Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards

Concrete, gravel, and mulch are sold by the cubic yard:

Cubic Yards = Cubic Feet ÷ 27

The number 27 comes from 3 feet × 3 feet × 3 feet = 27 cubic feet per cubic yard.

Cubic Yards from Linear Dimensions

For most construction calculations:

Cubic Yards = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324

Where 324 = 27 (cu ft/yard) × 12 (in/ft).

Board feet is the standard lumber measurement in North America:

Weight Conversions

Pounds to Tons

Construction materials are often sold by the ton:

Tons = Pounds ÷ 2,000

Gravel 2,800-3,000 lbs (1.4-1.5 tons)
Sand 2,600-2,800 lbs (1.3-1.4 tons)

Gallons Per Square Foot

For paint and coating projects:

Gallons Needed = Square Feet ÷ Coverage per Gallon

Most paint covers 350-400 sq ft per gallon. Multiply by number of coats:

Example: 500 sq ft room, 2 coats of paint:

  1. Coverage per coat: 500 ÷ 350 = 1.43 gallons
  2. Two coats: 1.43 × 2 = 2.86 gallons → 3 gallons

Linear to Area Conversions

Paint Coverage

  • 1 gallon of paint: Covers ~350-400 sq ft
  • 1 gallon of primer: Covers ~300-350 sq ft
  • 1 quart of paint: Covers ~100 sq ft

Flooring Coverage

  • 1 box of tile: Typically covers 10-15 sq ft
  • 1 sheet of plywood: 32 sq ft (4×8)
  • 1 square of roofing: 100 sq ft

Size to Weight Conversions

Converting from material dimensions to weight requires the density:

Common Mistakes

1. Forgetting to Convert Inches to Feet

A 4-inch thick slab is 0.333 ft, not 4 ft. Always convert smaller units to match the formula.

2. Mixing US and Metric Units

Double-check that all dimensions use the same system. A project mixing feet and meters will be catastrophically wrong.

3. Rounding Too Early

Carry at least 2-3 decimal places through calculations. Round only the final number when ordering.

4. Ignoring Waste Factor

Always add 5-15% waste to every material estimate. No project uses 100% of ordered material.
