The Complete Guide to Estimating Landscaping Materials
Learn how to estimate gravel, mulch, sand, river rock, and drainage materials for your landscaping project. Includes volume calculations, depth guidelines, and pro tips.
Estimating landscaping materials accurately saves money and prevents project delays. Unlike building materials, landscaping materials are sold by volume or weight — and the conversion depends on material density. This guide covers how to calculate the right amounts for gravel, mulch, sand, and specialty landscaping materials.
The Basic Landscaping Formula
For most landscaping materials, the calculation is the same:
Volume (cubic yards) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 324
The number 324 comes from: 27 (cu ft per cu yd) × 12 (inches per foot) = 324.
Depth Guidelines by Material
| Material | Typical Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mulch | 2-3 inches | Deeper than 3 inches prevents water penetration |
| Gravel (path) | 2-3 inches | Compacted |
| Gravel (driveway) | 4-6 inches | Multiple layers recommended |
| River rock | 2-3 inches | Larger stone needs deeper coverage |
| Sand (play) | 6-12 inches | Depth varies by use case |
| Decomposed granite | 2-4 inches | Compacted in lifts |
| Limestone base | 4-8 inches | Compacted in 4-inch lifts |
| Rip rap | 6-18 inches | Depth equals stone diameter |
Gravel and Crushed Stone
Gravel is sold by the cubic yard or ton. The conversion depends on stone size and type:
| Material | Weight (tons per cu yd) |
|---|---|
| Pea gravel (3/8“) | 1.3-1.4 |
| Crushed stone (3/4“) | 1.4-1.5 |
| Crushed stone (1.5“) | 1.3-1.4 |
| Limestone (3/4“) | 1.4-1.5 |
| Decomposed granite | 1.4-1.5 |
Driveway Gravel Calculator
A typical driveway uses three layers:
- Base layer: 4-6 inches of large crushed stone (2-3 inch)
- Middle layer: 2-3 inches of medium stone (3/4-1 inch)
- Surface layer: 2 inches of fine gravel or limestone
Example: 40×12 ft driveway, 6-inch total depth:
- Volume = 40 × 12 × 6 ÷ 324 = 8.9 cubic yards
- Total tons (at 1.4 tons/yard) = 12.5 tons
- Distribute across layers: base 5 tons, middle 4 tons, surface 3.5 tons
River Rock and Pebbles
River rock is sold by the ton or cubic yard. Because of the gaps between stones, river rock has a lower density than crushed stone:
- Small river rock (1-3 inches): ~1.2 tons per cubic yard
- Large river cobble (3-6 inches): ~1.1 tons per cubic yard
- Pea gravel: ~1.3 tons per cubic yard
Mulch
Mulch is one of the few materials sold by volume rather than weight:
- 1 cubic yard of mulch: Covers approximately 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep
- Bagged mulch: Typically 2 cubic feet per bag (14 bags = 1 cubic yard)
- Loose mulch: Sold by the cubic yard
Mulch Depth Recommendations
| Area | Recommended Depth |
|---|---|
| Garden beds | 2-3 inches |
| Around trees | 2-3 inches (keep away from trunk) |
| Playgrounds | 6-12 inches (engineered wood fiber) |
| Pathways | 2-3 inches |
Pro tip: Never pile mulch against tree trunks or building foundations. This traps moisture and causes rot. Keep a 3-6 inch gap.
Sand
Sand is used for masonry, concrete, play areas, and leveling:
| Sand Type | Density (lb/cu ft) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| Concrete sand | 100-110 | Mixing concrete, base material |
| Mason sand | 95-105 | Brick mortar, leveling |
| Play sand | 90-100 | Sandboxes, volleyball courts |
| Fill sand | 100-120 | General fill, drainage |
French Drain Materials
A French drain requires gravel and pipe. For a standard 18-inch deep, 12-inch wide trench:
Gravel Volume
Gravel (cu yd) = Trench Length (ft) × 1.5 (width ft) × 1.5 (depth ft) ÷ 27
The 1.5-ft dimensions account for gravel surrounding the pipe: the trench is wider than the pipe on each side.
Pipe Sizing
| Drain Length | Recommended Pipe Size |
|---|---|
| Under 50 ft | 4-inch perforated |
| 50-100 ft | 4-inch perforated |
| 100-200 ft | 6-inch perforated |
Additional Materials
- Filter fabric: Trench length × fabric width (typically 2-3 feet wider than trench)
- Pipe sock/filter: Same length as pipe
Fire Glass and Decorative Fill
Fire glass is sold by weight rather than volume:
| Pit Size | Glass Depth | Glass Required (lbs) |
|---|---|---|
| 12-inch round | 2 inches | 5-7 |
| 24-inch round | 2 inches | 15-20 |
| 36-inch round | 2 inches | 30-40 |
| 48-inch round | 2 inches | 55-70 |
Common Mistakes
1. Mixing Up Volume and Weight
Materials like gravel are often sold by the ton, but landscape fabric and mulch by the yard. Always confirm the unit before ordering.
2. Not Compacting Confirmation
When you order fill material, expect 20-30% compaction. Your delivered volume will compress once placed. Order 20-30% more for deep fills.
3. Forgetting Access
A dump truck carries about 10-12 cubic yards. If your access is narrow, you may need smaller deliveries or to move material by wheelbarrow.
4. Ordering Too Little for Large Projects
For large landscape projects, order 10-15% extra to account for uneven grading and touch-ups.
