How to Estimate Mulch and Soil: Landscape Volume Calculations

Learn how to calculate how many cubic yards or bags of mulch, soil, and gravel you need for garden beds and pathways.

Planning a spring garden layout or refreshing flower beds requires ordering bulk soil, compost, or wood mulch. Landscaping materials are typically sold in two ways: by the cubic yard (for bulk delivery) or by the bag (at local garden centers).

This guide teaches you how to calculate the exact volume of mulch, soil, or compost your garden requires, saving you money on delivery fees.


The Landscape Volume Formula

To find the volume of material needed, calculate the area of the garden bed and multiply by the desired depth.

Step 1: Calculate the Area (Square Feet)

For rectangular garden beds, multiply the length by the width: $$\text{Area} = \text{Length (ft)} \times \text{Width (ft)}$$

For circular flower beds, measure the radius (distance from the center to the outer edge in feet): $$\text{Area} = \pi \times \text{Radius}^2 \approx 3.14 \times \text{Radius}^2$$

Step 2: Convert Material Depth to Feet

Landscaping depth is usually specified in inches (typically 2 to 4 inches for mulch, 6 to 12 inches for raised garden bed soil). Divide depth by 12: $$\text{Depth (ft)} = \text{Depth (in)} \div 12$$

Step 3: Calculate Cubic Yards

Multiply Area by Depth (in feet) to find cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards (which is the industry standard for ordering bulk materials): $$\text{Cubic Yards (yd}^3\text{)} = \frac{\text{Area (sq ft)} \times \text{Depth (ft)}}{27}$$


Worked Example: Estimating Mulch

Suppose you want to apply 3 inches of cedar mulch to a rectangular flower bed that is 8 feet wide and 30 feet long:

  1. Area: $8\text{ ft} \times 30\text{ ft} = 240\text{ sq ft}$
  2. Depth in Feet: $3\text{ inches} \div 12 = 0.25\text{ ft}$
  3. Cubic Yards: $$\text{Volume} = \frac{240 \times 0.25}{27} = \frac{60}{27} = \mathbf{2.22\text{ cubic yards}}$$

If buying bulk, you would order 2.25 to 2.5 cubic yards (rounding up to account for settling).


Converting Cubic Yards to Bags

If you are transporting materials yourself in bags, convert the cubic yards based on the standard bag sizes sold in home centers:

  • 2 Cubic Foot Bags (Standard Mulch): There are 27 cubic feet in a cubic yard. Therefore: $$\text{Number of 2 cu ft Bags} = \text{Cubic Yards} \times 13.5$$ For our 2.22 cubic yard example: $2.22 \times 13.5 = 29.9 \rightarrow \mathbf{30\text{ bags}}$.

  • 3 Cubic Foot Bags (Large Compost/Soil): $$\text{Number of 3 cu ft Bags} = \text{Cubic Yards} \times 9$$ For 2.22 cubic yards: $2.22 \times 9 = 20\text{ bags}$.

  • 0.75 Cubic Foot Bags (Heavy Topsoil/Sand): $$\text{Number of 0.75 cu ft Bags} = \text{Cubic Yards} \times 36$$


Ensure you apply the correct thickness based on the material type:

  • Bark Mulch: 2 to 3 inches (prevents weeds and retains moisture without choking plant roots).
  • Compost Top-Dressing: 1/4 to 1/2 inch (spread over lawns or mixed into existing garden soil).
  • Raised Garden Bed Soil: 8 to 12 inches (provides plenty of depth for root growth).
  • Crushed Gravel Pathway: 2 to 3 inches (compacted over landscape fabric).
