Concrete Slab Thickness Guide: Patios, Driveways, and Sheds

Learn the standard concrete slab thickness requirements for different projects. Find recommended thickness for driveways, patios, walkways, shed foundations, and RV pads.

Choosing the correct concrete slab thickness is critical to the longevity, safety, and load capacity of your structure. Under-designing a slab leads to premature cracking and settlement under loads, while over-designing wastes money on extra ready-mix volume.

For most residential applications, concrete slabs range between 4 inches (10 cm) and 6 inches (15 cm) in thickness. Here is how to determine the correct depth for your specific project.

4-Inch Slabs vs. 6-Inch Slabs: What’s the Difference?

The 4-Inch Slab (The Residential Standard)

A 4-inch slab is the standard thickness for almost all non-structural residential concrete projects. It is designed to support pedestrian foot traffic, light lawn equipment, and passenger vehicles.

  • Load Limit: Generally supports up to 40 pounds per square inch (psi) of live load if built on well-compacted soil.
  • Ready-Mix Math: One cubic yard of concrete covers exactly 81 square feet at 4 inches thick (before waste factors).

The 6-Inch Slab (The Heavy-Duty Standard)

A 6-inch slab is used when the concrete must support heavy point loads, such as large recreational vehicles (RVs), commercial delivery trucks, or heavy workshop machinery.

  • Load Limit: Supports heavy heavy-duty traffic and structural walls.
  • Ready-Mix Math: One cubic yard covers exactly 54 square feet at 6 inches thick.

Crucial Subgrade & Prep Tips

Regardless of thickness, the strength of the concrete depends heavily on the base beneath it:

  1. Uniform Compaction: Loose soil under a slab leads to voids. Always use a mechanical plate compactor on the subgrade and gravel base.
  2. Gravel Sub-Base: A 4-inch layer of crushed stone (like #57 gravel) provides a capillary break that prevents groundwater from wicking into the concrete and causing freeze-thaw damage.
  3. Vapor Barriers: For indoor garage slabs or sheds housing sensitive tools, install a 10-mil poly vapor barrier over the gravel base to prevent moisture from evaporating upward.
  4. Waste Buffer: When ordering concrete, always add a 10% waste factor to your calculator volume. Excavation limits are rarely perfectly uniform, and formwork flexing can easily consume an extra 5% to 8% of ready-mix.
