Subfloor Preparation Guidelines for Ceramic and Porcelain Tile

A guide on preparing plywood, OSB, and concrete subfloors for tile installation. Deflection limits, backer boards, and crack isolation.

Unlike carpet or vinyl, tile does not bend. If your subfloor flexes or shifts even slightly, the tiles will crack and the grout lines will crumble. Preparing a solid, deflection-free subfloor is the single most important part of any tile project.

1. Checking Deflection (Floor Flex)

Before laying tile, your floor joists must meet strict deflection limits:

  • Ceramic & Porcelain Tile: Joist deflection must not exceed L/360 (the span length divided by 360). For example, a 15-foot joist span can flex no more than 1/2 inch under design load.
  • Natural Stone: Requires a stiffer floor meeting L/720 deflection limits.

If your floor joists flex too much, you must reinforce them by sistering additional joists or adding support blocking underneath.

2. Plywood Underlayment Rules

  • Do not tile directly on OSB: Standard thinset mortar does not bond well to the resins used in OSB.
  • Expansion Gaps: Leave a 1/8-inch gap between plywood sheets to allow for wood expansion due to temperature and humidity fluctuations.
  • Fastener Pattern: Secure the underlayment plywood sheets every 6 inches on the edges and every 8 inches in the field. Do not screw into the joists—only into the subfloor—to prevent nails from shearing when the floor settles.

3. Cement Backer Board (CBU) Installation

Cement board does not add structural strength; it provides a moisture-stable surface for thinset to bond with:

  1. Apply Thinset Below CBU: Spread a layer of latex-modified thinset mortar over the plywood using a 1/4-inch square-notched trowel before laying the cement board.
  2. Screw Down CBU: Fasten the backer board using corrosion-resistant screws spaced every 8 inches.
  3. Tape the Seams: Fill all joints between cement boards with thinset and overlay with 2-inch alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh tape.
