Start PlanningPreparation Checklist
- Call 811 to mark underground utilities before digging post holes
- Verify local building department requirements — footings below frost line
- Submit deck permit if required by local code (typically required for decks over 30 inches high)
- Order lumber and hardware — pressure-treated, joist hangers, ledger flashing
Tools & Equipment
Execution Timeline
Site Prep & Footings
Mark post locations, dig pier holes below frost line, pour concrete footings and set post anchors.
Hire Pro (Post-hole digging and concrete pouring)
Frame & Joists
Install ledger board, beam supports, and joist hangers. Ensure level and square framing.
DIY (Helper recommended for heavy beams)
Decking Boards
Screw down deck boards with proper gap spacing for drainage and expansion.
DIY (Use deck screw gun for speed)
Railings & Stairs
Install posts, top and bottom rails, balusters at 4-inch max spacing, and build stair stringers.
DIY (Follow IRC code for baluster spacing)
Stain & Seal
Clean deck surface, apply weather-resistant stain or sealant, and allow 24-hour dry time.
DIY (Apply with roller or sprayer)
Common Mistakes
- Setting posts below frost line in cold climates (causes frost heave and deck shifting).
- Using untreated lumber for ground-contact posts and beams (leads to rot within 2-3 years).
- Forgetting to install joist tape or flashing on top of joists (prevents rot from standing water).
- Over-spanning joists beyond code limits per the IRC span table, causing bounce.
Cleanup Checklist
- Remove all construction debris, sawdust, and fasteners from site
- Dispose of concrete washout water properly — never into storm drains
- Return unused hardware, stain, and lumber within return window
- Store leftover stain/sealer in conditioned space for future touch-ups
Maintenance Tips
- Clean and re-seal deck surface every 1-2 years depending on sun exposure
- Check ledger board flashing annually for signs of water intrusion
- Tighten loose railings and balusters each spring after freeze-thaw cycle
- Inspect posts at ground level for rot or insect damage yearly
