Common Mistakes

  • Installing siding without a proper drainage plane behind it (trapped moisture causes rot).
  • Nailing siding too tight — thermal expansion causes buckling in summer heat.
  • Not leaving weepholes at the bottom of brick veneer (trapped water destroys mortar).
  • Mixing siding materials without proper transition flashing between different wall claddings.

Cleanup Checklist

  • Remove old siding debris, nails, and construction waste from property
  • Magnetic sweeper to collect dropped nails and screws from lawn
  • Clean caulk nozzles and store sealant for future repairs
  • Return unused siding panels and trim within supplier return window

Maintenance Tips

  • Inspect siding annually for cracks, gaps, or loose panels after winter freeze-thaw
  • Power wash vinyl or fiber cement siding every 2-3 years with gentle pressure
  • Re-caulk around windows, doors, and corner trim as sealant degrades over time
  • Keep shrubs and vegetation trimmed at least 6 inches from siding to prevent moisture damage
