Decking Materials

A deck requires more than just deck boards. Here is the complete material breakdown:

Joist Layout

Joist spacing determines deck board span capacity:

Calculating Joists

Number of joists = (Deck Width / Joist Spacing) + 1

Example: 12-ft wide deck, 16-inch joist spacing:

Deck Board Quantity

Linear feet of decking = Deck Length × (Deck Width / Board Width + Gap)

For standard 5/4×6 decking (actual width 5.5 inches) with a 1/8 inch gap:

  • Each board covers about 5.375 inches
  • For a 12-ft wide deck: 144 ÷ 5.375 = 26.8 → 27 boards
